Alright guys, time to get into the characters! We’ll start off by introducing one of the main characters of the book series, and the main character of book one. Elrik is the champion of light, and servant of the spirit mother and vanguard empire and his role is super important. His back-story will be a bit sad (I think) as he has a troubled youth. This bio is how Elrik became a champion and the events that took place before it happened. But, with that being said…Hope you guys enjoy!
- Rank: Supreme Commander and 2nd Command to the Vanguard Empire
- Champion of Light to the Spirit Mother
- Commands more than 7 legions, though for his rank, he should only have 7
Elrik was born to a prestigious family. Everyone in Vanguard society is equal and treated as equal but during the war, the need for competent commanders became necessary and if you belonged to a family with such a commander you were given special treatment in some areas. Elrik’s father was a man everyone looked up and had the respect of his men. Elrik’s father was poised to rise to the top and enter the King’s inner circle. Elrik’s four brothers, three of which were nearly done with their training and the other who had just entered were looked upon with eager eyes. Everyone had high hopes for them as everyone knew their father would raise them to be the best and during this dark hour, the best was needed.
When Elrik was born he has a small condition. This condition is not serious but can lead to what is called “Being a runt”. Because you cannot tell when they are babies, you just have to hope the child overcomes and becomes normal. It is rare for a child to become a runt so the majority of families do not even worry. Those that do can only wait and see. Elrik indeed turned out to be a runt and because of vanguard law the family was stuck with him. Elrik grew up in a hostile environment and everyone in his family hated him. His brothers, mother, father, uncles and aunts, cousins all wanted nothing to do with him. Elrik’s status as a runt brought shame to his family and especially his father. His father due to his skill was still needed but the chances he once had are now gone. Elrik’s father most of all hated Elrik with a passion and thought of nothing else but to kill him.
Elrik grew up with daily beatings, sometimes being tortured. Elrik was near death by the end of the day. His brothers and father would take turn healing him so he’d be ready for the next day. Elrik was too small and weak to fight back and could do nothing to stop the punishment. Elrik lived each day never knowing if it would be his last. Sometimes at the end of each night, Elrik’s family wouldn’t heal him and would let him suffer all night and in the morning continue their onslaught. Sometimes they would do this and torture him to the point where his heart and soul could take no more and he crept upon the gates of the Underworld and then they’d bring him back and heal him and begin again.
Luckily, Elrik lived near Vanguard who did not care that he was a runt. Roderick, Arlon, Godrick, Ivar and N’jal all lived next to Elrik’s family. Some days, Elrik was able to escape and hide out his with friends and their families. On those days, Elrik was able to live a little and be normal. Elrik never learned to speak properly, never learned to make friends, and never learned to be normal. But for Elrik, his friends didn’t care. They befriended him and looked after him. Some nights they would take turns hiding him and Elrik was given moments of peace and rest. The families would feed Elrik because he was a runt and his energy couldn’t provide for his body like a normal vanguard’s would. Women do not have this ability either so they require food for energy.
Elrik lived like this for 7 years and in those 7 years had felt so much pain by those that should have loved him. Vanguard law does not protect runts from this kind of abuse. Fathers own their families and can do as they please as long as its within the law. But for Elrik, the law wouldn’t protect him. His friends would defend him against his brothers but when his father entered the picture they could only watch. Elrik was broken and had never been loved. He was always afraid and preferred to stay inside most of the time instead of trying to sneak out because he knew if caught, the punishment would be even worse.
On the day when children are assembled and ready to take their entrance exam into the military academy, Elrik was left behind and was told to stay home. Elrik’s father didn’t want him embarrassing his other brothers. Harek, and Elrik’s 3 other brothers were all present that day. Harek and his older brother were taking the exam while the older two (yet to graduate) watched with their father. Elrik showed up anyways with the encouragement from Arlon’s father. When Elrik showed up it infuriated his father and his father went into a rage. Not being able to control himself he beat Elrik to death. Elrik laid on the ground with tears in his eye in a puddle that covered half his body. Elrik’s father walked back to his sons like nothing had happened. Guards were called and Elrik’s father waited patiently for their arrival. Arlon and his father ran to Elrik, and Arlon cried as he watched his friend lay there on the ground motionless. Elrik’s eyes had only fear in them.
Arlon and his father walked away and the guards were preparing the bag that Elrik would go into. Suddenly, Elrik’s eyes lit up and glowed like a true vanguard’s would. Elrik stood up like nothing even happened. Elrik’s father looked stunned as well as his brothers. Elrik then said something everyone was shocked to hear. Elrik challenged his father and all his brothers to a fight to the death. Elrik’s father and 3 of his brothers accepted the challenge as they did not fear Elrik and did not believe he had even the smallest chance of winning. Harek knew better and declined the battle. Harek decided to watch as he had a feeling of what was about to happen next. As soon as they all said yes, Elrik shot forth and killed all 4. Elrik’s father and 3 brothers went down without ever moving an inch towards Elrik to fight. Elrik later went home and killed his mother.
The king had been in the area that day and took notice of Elrik and gave him a passing grade and allowed him to enter the academy. No one but Elrik knew how he returned. Elrik upon his death had spoken to the Spirit Mother and she had chosen him to be her champion of light. Elrik accepted her offer and upon saying yes was instantly brought back to his body where the spirit mother had resurrected him. Elrik from that point on was never referred to as a runt and moved up in the rank quicker than any other vanguard before him. Elrik became hungry for strength and devoured the souls of his enemies. Elrik is loyal and so he never wanted the throne, but he wanted the next best thing, to gain the rank of 2nd Command to the Vanguard Empire. Elrik achieved this rank 215 years after his rebirth as a champion.
I know this one was a bit brutal but it had to be said. This is how I always envisioned Elrik’s back story to be and I hope you enjoyed it. Let me know what you think below!
