Command & Conquer: Generals 2

I love the command & Conquer series to death!  To see that another video game in the series is coming out has me jumping for joy and punching people in the face.  But, let me calm down a bit.  Electronic Arts is returning to the slightly more realistic Generals brand, which we haven’t heard much about since the Zero Hour expansion back in 2003. Generals 2 will take place ten years after the first game. IGN has an interview with Jon Van Caneghem and IGN asked a question about whether the game will focus on single-player mode or multiplayer mode.  I for one want single-player mode as I am not a multiplayer type of person when it comes to command & conquer but I guess evenly doing both will work I guess.  Here is what Jon Van Caneghem had to say.

Jon Van Caneghem: We’re focusing equal efforts on both single player and multiplayer. You definitely need both to be competitive in the genre. On the single player side, we’re building a campaign that allows you to experience this new war from multiple perspectives. We’ve got some great plans for multiplayer but aren’t going into any details at this time. I’ll just say there’s going to be a lot more variety than you typically see.

In the same article, IGN asks Jon Van Caneghem what is the story setup for Generals 2. I love where EA and Bioware are going with the story line. Jon’s reply was:

Jon Van Caneghem: Generals 2 takes place ten years after the events in Generals. At the beginning the world is actually at peace. There’s a huge conference where a landmark peace treaty is about to be signed. But moments before that happens, a terrorist attack takes away all of the leaders in attendance. The only leaders who are left are the generals and that’s where you come in. We have three factions in the game, the GLA, the EU and one more we aren’t revealing – yet!

Lastly, I would like to take a snippet I found on GameRant.  GameRant in their article posted something I thought I would share with you all. Enjoy.

IGN and AusGamers posted interviews they conducted with BioWare co-founder Dr. Ray Muzyka and executive producer Jon Van Caneghem about Command & Conquer: Generals 2 which revealed a few tidbits about the direction of the game and their goal with the bringing the game pack. Below are the highlights of the information gleaned:

  • Original Command & Conquer: Generals is the best selling game in the series and BioWare Victory wanted to delve in to the near-future time period.
  • Jon Van Caneghem: “One of our main goals is to bring C&C back to the roots that have made it one of the most popular and beloved properties in the strategy genre and that revolves around the core gameplay.”
  • Generals (players) command “huge, massive armies.”
  • Entire new game elements will be added.
  • Game takes place 10 years after the events of the first Generals and begins with a terrorist attack taking out world leaders at a peace treaty signing.
  • Three factions: GLA, EU and an unannounced third (the terrorists).
  • Victory studio formed beginning of the year, became a part of BioWare in the summer – It’s not even the same BioWare who makes Mass Effect, Dragon Age, etc. They just attached “BioWare” to this other EA studio.
  • Command & Conquer: Generals 2 is PC only and is developed using the Frostbite 2 engine (see: Battlefield 3).
  • Battlegrounds will be “fully destructible.”
  • Cinematics will be in-game thanks to Frostbite 2 with the goal of making them immersive.
  • BioWare Victory aims to offer both a strong single-player campaign and strong multiplayer.
  • Expect a lot of new features for multiplayer.
  • “Accessible” but “challenging to master.”
  • Generals 2 will be serious compared to the camp factor found in the Tiberium and Red Alert games.
