Well, well, well. Boys and girls, welcome back. Apologies for the long wait but when your computer goes down on you… well not a very pleasant experience. Today’s topic though, is something I’m pretty sure most rabid gamers have thought about at least once. What’s the point in having so many HD remakes?? Stick with me while I explore this age old (ok maybe year or two old MAX) question.
What made me ask about HD remakes? Well just a few minutes ago, I found out that the Devil May Cry series is being converted, and I found myself asking, what’s the point? Will there be a better story? Doubt it… Will there be some giant cinematic we missed the first time around because of dull SD? Again, doubt it! Let’s face it, nothing will change, except a graphical overhaul (and even that probably won’t change too much).
So then I asked myself, “Self, what’s the point of having HD remakes?” After an enlightening conversation between myself and my Self, I came to the realization that it’s all about one thing: $$$. Let’s face it, we see people with 60″ screens, people with things they hardly ever use, why? Because they LOOK better… and it’s never going to stop. But if you’re honest with yourself, do the games actually look better? Not by a long shot…
Let’s take Prince of Persia (the Sands of Time collection) as an example. When you popped in the disc, you were greeted with an environment that… well to me, looked almost the same. Sure the gameplay graphics were a bit sharper and more detailed, but cinematics were pretty much untouched!
Same with the God of War HD remakes. I was at a friend’s house playing it, and what a jarring effect it has when one second you’re watching a high def killer eviscerating people, then the next there’s a half blurry video of him going to his next task, and you think there’s something wrong with the screen.
The worst thing with both of these collections is that nothing’s changed. You don’t get bonus scenes for playing again, no bonus modes, and the graphical changes sometimes don’t even look as nice as you’d expect.
Now, honestly I wouldn’t be so upset about this HD Collection craze usually, but there’s one other thing that gets me annoyed: why do they not update games that were extremely old? I’m sure many of you, even if you haven’t got a Playstation, have heard of Final Fantasy VII. it’s a PS1 game and people have been clamoring for an HD Remake for ages… So what gets me is, these studios all want your money, but they just like making tiny graphical changes and calling it a day. When it comes to actual hard work, I don’t think there’s a chance of us seeing any HD remakes we want, not true ones anyway.
What do you guys think? Is it just me or do HD collections seem like a waste of money? This rabid gamer would love to hear what you think.
See you next time.
